Our mental and emotional health is reflected in the physical state of our body. And when you work on both your mind and your body in the treatment of illness, each reacts synergistically, supporting the healing of the other. This mind-body connection has become the central focus of the Copeman Neuroscience Centre, in both the treatment of mental illness and clinical research.
The fact is that all of our body systems, including our emotional, neurological, glandular and immune systems, are connected, speaking the common language of neurochemistry. Whatever happens in one system impacts the others. Therefore, it is not surprising that people with emotional difficulties often experience physical complaints, such as changes in weight, pain, insomnia, fatigue, muscle tension, and cardiac and gastrointestinal issues. For example, many people don’t realize that there is a link between certain mental health issues, such as depression, and heart disease - and this link is as strong as many commonly known lifestyle risk factors such as smoking or lack of exercise.
Recognition of the very important “mind-body connection” is why Copeman Healthcare established the Copeman Neuroscience Centre in January, 2007. Professionals work within a team that includes psychiatrists, psychologists, family practitioners, kinesiologists and dieticians, to provide the best comprehensive mental and physical healthcare.
