Psychology studies the human mind and behavior. The goals of research in psychology are to understand and explain thought, emotion, and behavior. Once understood, applications of psychology include mental health treatment, performance enhancement, stress management, goal orientation, self-help, and numerous other areas affecting health and daily life.
There are many branches of psychology. The Copeman Neuroscience Centre focuses on clinical psychology, which is concerned with the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders. The Centre places particular emphasis on mood, anxiety and stress disorders, and other associated conditions such as addiction and relationship problems.
Preventing mental illness, or reducing the effects of mental illness on an individual’s functioning through early diagnosis, is the best possible outcome that can be achieved. The Centre employs numerous methods to seek out early indicators of mental health problems to allow for intervention before a problem progresses.
Psychological counseling is usually delivered in one hour sessions and, depending on the complexity of the problem, will include a comprehensive assessment using evidence-based questionnaires and other tools. Psychologists at the centre use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as the primary treatment modality. Psychologists accept private referrals from family practitioners, as well as self referrals.
Psychologists at the Copeman Neurosciences Centre work with psychiatrists and other team members to formulate the best treatment strategy for you. |
