The cost of mental illness to organizations is staggering. It is estimated that over $7 billion is currently being spent in Canada on uninsured mental health services and time off work for depression and distress that is not being treated by the health care system.
These costs are only the ones that can be readily measured. “Presenteeism”, a global problem where personnel are at work but have impaired concentration and productivity, could possibly dwarf “absenteeism” in terms of costs to the organization. Moreover, there is a close relationship between mental health and the physical health of individuals, increasing the seriousness of the problem.
At the Copeman Neuroscience Centre, our priority is the early detection of treatment of anxiety and mood disorders in the workplace. Private and public workplaces provide a unique opportunity to research effective treatment methods, particularly because there is an alignment of interest in dealing with the problem.
