Mental illness affects virtually everyone in our society. Most of us will be personally touched by it, whether it is due to our own illness, or someone very close to us. In Canada, more than 20% of people will experience mild to severe problems with depression and/or anxiety. And everyone is impacted to varying degrees by stress - from family, relationship and work difficulties, and from losses and other difficult life experiences. Yet there continues to be a profound stigma surrounding these problems, which often prevents those affected from seeking treatment. The following graph shows the likelihood of developing depression and anxiety disorders outlining the breadth of the problem in our society. |

The Copeman Neurosciences Centre is an advanced treatment and research facility created to address a growing need for more comprehensive and effective programs for the early diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. It is also dedicated to confronting the stigma associated with mental illness, so that every person affected will feel comfortable seeking proper treatment and help, as they would with other serious medical conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.
Although the Centre provides world-class psychology and psychiatric services for people with existing conditions, it is equally committed to preventive mental health. One of the main areas of focus for our research centre is the development and refinement of simple, effective tools to detect early signs of mental illness so that professionals can intervene quickly and reverse its progression. |
